1993-12-30 Portland, ME

Just got through set 1 of 12/30/93 Portland

Gotta say I was kinda disappointed by it.

A hot Bowie to open, but right now I'm burnt out on Bowie (never my favorite song to begin with) and they all kinda sound the same
Weigh was great to hear but this one felt tired and nothing special

The Curtain
>Sample In a Jar

NOW the guys got it in gear!!

The Curtain was like KABLAM punch in the face, and the then the segue in Sample was so flawlessly executed one could be excused for thinking it was part of Curtain.

This Sample was maybe the best one of the pre-Hoist versions yet. It's been awkward and finding its footing so far but this one stuck out as having extra oomph. Sounded like it grew into itself more finally. Great Sample!

Paul and Silas is Paul and Silas

Forbin>Ice Rink Narration>Mockingbird - Forbin was pretty good and the ice rink narration was entertaining. Trey totally butchers his entrance into Mockingbird though and kinda deflates it from the beginning, never totally regaining flight.

Rift felt pretty hot but ended up not leaving me excited. Huh.

Bathtub Gin - the clear winner of ths set. Fantastic Gin!!! Hell, for 5 or so whole minutes the guys go total Type II and show us what they can do. Terrific Gin worth scoping out for sure!!!

Free Bird - the less said the better :D

Hope set 2 hits me better than this one did, cuz the setlist looks great (Punch You in the Eye!!!) and I'm gonna be real bummed if it lets me down :p

--------------------------------------------------

Now THIS is more like it! :)

Right off the bat, set 2 comes on strong with totally better energy.

We are vibin' now, boys and girls :p

2001
>Mike's Song

Wonderful opening to the set. 2001 is funky and actually feels better than the usual versions from this time.

Mike's gets evil and nasty real quick like precursor to Carini or something.

Mike's Song never disappoints :p

THAT SEGUE OUT OF MIKE'S AND INTO HORSE!

---------------------------------------------------

Just finished set 2 of 12/30/93

As I mentioned, set 1 was a very mixed bag with some great spots but also very disappointing for the most part (for me!).

Set 2 destroyed

This was a nearly flawless second set. If we delete Purple Rain>Hold Your Head Up, this was as close to perfection as I've heard recently. An outstanding second set.

Overall, it was worth it :D

Here's my highlights notes for this show:

12/30 Portland **(Sticky night for Trey but set 2 is among the best of the year!!!)
The Curtain
>Sample In a Jar
Colonel Forbin/Narration
Bathtub Gin (Uptempo type II fun. Ending dissolves into ambiance. Very cool.)
2001 (Better than most recent versions)
>Mike's Song (FAN FREAKING TASTIC. CARINI ANYONE? Multi-sectional Type II. A Journey!!!! Holy crap!!! Greatest Mike's Song of '93?!)
>The Horse/Silent in the Morning (THAT SEGUE!)
Punch You In the Eye (Great uptempo version. Excellent reading!)
>McGrupp and the Watchful Hosemasters
>Weekapaug Groove (Vocal jam!)
Slave to the Traffic Light
Good Times Bad Times
