1997-06-14 Dublin, IRE

Redoing 6/14/97 as we speak. Home at the computer for this one.

6/14/97 Dublin #2

Set 1

Down With Disease - Not the longest version, nor the most exploratory, this is basically an exceptional Type 1 outing. It really feels like it has extra oomph to it, it's just that they decide to use it as a hot blast of air to the face instead of an adventurous launchpad for something greater. Really great little version.

NICU - is NICU. Good stuff.

Dirt - The debut of Dirt is up next. This is fantastic and sounds as put-together as the much-later Farmhouse studio recording. This version is mildly more uptempo rather than a slow dirge, and all around is just a terrific little gem. Debut's don't get much stronger than this!

Talk - Another uber-rare full band reading of Talk. Talk is Talk but this is great.

My Soul - Is My Soul. Standard heat.

Limb By Limb - Most people online said this one was better than the version from night 1, but to my ears this is just more standard and less exciting overall. Good version, but nothing that mindblowing.

Bye Bye Foot - Is BBF. Good stuff.

Free - The song itself is rather pedestrian sounding, but as soon as they get to the "duh duh" middle section it immediately dives in to 1997 porno funk land!!! FUNKY AND FREE! LET'S GET IT! This sucker reaches nearly 12 minutes in length and is just full of extra P n V. X Factor funkiness in the extreme!!! Must hear!!!

Prince Caspian - Caspian is Caspian

All in all, a bit of a snoozer of a set. Dirt and Talk and Bye Bye Foot were all great but the opening Disease and the porno Free were the main highlights you need. Not an amazing set and definitely doesn't top that of night 1.

On mobile now so excuse the typing.

Set 2

Twist - The debut, interesting for the alternate feel to the song. Played more "straight ahead", featuring incredibly funky soloing from Page throughout. Surprisingly enjoyable!!! Gets super funky!!!! Killer funk jamming!!!! Sick!!!!

Piper - The debut. Very lengthy intro on this one, it barely reaches 5 minutes and is over before its begun, lol. Seriously, its very strange in a "what was that?!" kind of way.

Saw It Again - Debut again. Trey lets it rip and it gets a good head of steam going. Better than Piper, thats for sure.

Waking Up - Yet another debut, this odd little tune appears. Id like to hear it more but its no masterpiece.

Dogs Stole Things - And this already weak set continues its nosedive....Solid enough but Dogs is Dogs.

Waste - Great version but exactly what this set DIDN'T need at this point!!!! Seriously though, everyone is next level on this. One of the absolute greatest version of recent memory!!!

Back home now and back on the computer for the rest:

David Bowie - Finally some substance!!!! How about a massive 18+ minute Bowie?!
Very oddball intro with heavy quotations of something resembling "Dave's Energy Guide". Following this the intro dies down and the crowd ERUPTS, stomping and clapping their asses off like it's a football match!!! Eventually the song starts up and is a little sloppy at the beginning, but quickly Trey pulls it together. They do their meandering Bowie thing for a very long time on this one, about 15 or so minutes until the whole thing just explodes/melts down. I'm not a Bowie guy, but this was pretty great, imo. It just goes and goes and goes and builds forever.

Cavern -
Up next is Cavern. This one bucks the trend and turns into a funky porno vamp jam! Where did this come from?!?!?! Porno Cavern?! 10 minutes in length, you can pretty much say this one goes Type II!!!!!! Synthesziers, bass FX and funky playing everywhere! X Factor Magic strikes again!!! TYPE 2 PORNO FUNK CAVERN!! WHAT IS EVEN HAPPENNING?!?!?!? And then magically, around 8:30, the guys launch back into Cavern like we didn't just spend 5 minutes out in funky outer space!!!! GREATEST CAVERN OF ALL TIME!!!! X FACTOR MAGIC! MUST HEAR MUST HEAR MUST HEAR!

When the Circus Comes to Town - Circus is Circus. Good stuff.

Rocky Top - Is Rocky Top. Yee haw.

All in all, this was definitely an inferior show to night 1, but gosh darn if it doesn't win for spontaneous strangeness. In set 1, the Disease and Free are all you really need. In set 2, I'd say the debut of Twist, the epic Bowie and the UBER FUNK Cavern are all must hear in the best way. Not exactly a great show, it kinda feels like an open rehearsal for a fan club or something like that. Very odd gig.
