Set 1
A nice choice of Free into Birds to open night 2 at the Sphere. There isn't much just say about either. They are both red hot and full of energy but at the same time neither is particularly memorable or off the hook. They both get the job done in the most "average excellent" manner possible. Definitely a "warming up" pairing tonight.
Following that we get an average Martian Monster. Thankfully this is where things seem to click a little bit and the energy gets a little bit looser and hotter. There is nothing here that you need to run out and grab immediately and this version is over before you can blink but there is some kind of shift.
Up next is a very rare Guelah Papyrus. It's not 100% perfect but it's about 99% there. It's pretty tight for the most part other than some loose moments early on by Page. It's hotter and better than you expect and is totally awesome. Great stuff.
Divided Sky is next. It's neither a bad version nor a great one, featuring a lot of energy and tight playing overall, aside from one ridiculous nightmare flub early on by Trey (You can't miss it, lol). It definitely does the job but it's nothing you can recommend to anyone either.
From here, just as it seems set one is going the way of set two from night number one, they all LOCK IN and the set skyrockets!!! Some x factor strikes out of nowhere or something!
Hey Stranger follows DS, doing its typical HS thing. Something happens in the solo and that magical thing that you can't describe happens where they all sync up and lock in and things start to flow in that way you can't explain. The jam proceeds to absolutely EXPLODE In a way I don't think I've ever heard a HS do (and that's saying a lot!). There isn't much to say except that it's just a nuclear bomb reading that has some X Factor going on for sure. You need to run out and hear this right now, It will have your head banging uncontrollably. Damn!
Even BETTER is Mull!! Not a song I expected for the Sphere, it's basically Hey Stranger part two. It doesn't get strange but It absolutely goes off the freaking rails just annihilating and crushing everything in sight holy moly. HOTTEST MULL EVER LET'S FREAKING GO!!!! MUST HEAR MUST HEAR MUST HEAR!!!
They keep the magic going strong with an exceptional reading of Limb by Limb. Three for three with the must hear material, this one is a bit special. The jam immediately begins In a darker more serious kind of zone for a while before moving out and exploding into the magic you expect. Kind of hard to explain. But it's a phenomenal reading that you absolutely need to hear at all costs.
The set concludes with a fiery Suzy That keeps the good times coming.
All in all this was a really good set! It started kind of stiff but always had energy from the start. It definitely felt like it took them a long time to warm into it. Then somewhere in the middle it just took right the F off and didnt look back!!!
Limb, Stranger and Mull are essential listening. Those three pieces are worth the price of admission. Absolutely spectacular readings of all three. The rest of the set was serviceable and good but nothing exceptional.
A B+ on the whole for me
Set 2
Oh boy here we go, let's get ready for the Super Light. Anywho the second said opens on a fiery note with an upbeat in energetic 11 minute No Men. Great choice! It's a good type 1 reading with high energy. Nothing special but it has a really annoying ending - towards the end the song really starts to take off and starts cooking hard. Trey hits The robo synth quickly and then immediately backpedals and ends the song instead. Talk about being blueballed!
Thankfully it is completely forgotten about when they immediately proceed to unleash what is likely the GOAT version of Light ever played (the GOAT for 4.0 at least). They need to just rename this Dark! It's a MONSTER!!! 23 minutes in length, This is a true all-timer to the nth degree. Just pure darkness, heavy and hot. Some rocking, some complete black hole meltdowns, etc A bit of this in a bit of that, The big problem with it is that it's a little bit schizophrenic refusing to lock into any bit for more than two or three minutes tops. Just as you're really sinking into a part they move out of it and into another and that gets annoying. But other than that nitpick this is pure magical X Factor of the highest order. From Hard Rocking to outer space meltdowns, it's an absolute monstrosity.
In a case of perfect setlist construction, they ease us out of the black hole back to Earth with a calmly welcoming rendition of Joy. That's how you do proper aftercare ladies and gentlemen. I typically strong version that helps us reset our minds for the rest of the.
Up next is a smokin old school Mike's Groove. I'm saying it's just good enough to call must hear. Mikes is just insane. Immediately it feels like it's got extra thump and juice about it. You know this one is going to COOK! And cook it does! This thing just smokes and turns into the raging fiery mess with Trey going nuts with a pitch shifter piercing our ears and the whole thing just collapsing in on itself in the best way. Perfect. Hydro is Hydro. Paug is Paug But again it just smokes tonight so I'm definitely including it.
We then get another deserved breather with a magical Sea of Stars. This one quickly goes type to rocketing us up dreamly into the heavens. It spends the majority of its time there allowing us to waft away into the ether, The night sky twinkling around us in a psychedelic haze. Absolutely some X Factor on this one it's a spectacular reading you have to hear.
It has a terrific wind down section with a masterful segue into Most Events to close the set proper. I don't know if it reaches must hear status but it's as good as any other smokin. type 1 version of this song. Killer set closing!!!
The encore tonight is terrific consisting of the live debut of Brief Time (honestly who even recognized this song, haha) followed by a face smasher Carini to close. It must be said though, Brief Time had me bawling my eyes out.... And that Carini! HOLY FREAKING MOTHER OF SATAN!!! Yes it destroys like usual but this one actually goes type 2 if you can believe it!! I'm calling it type two anyways. In the middle of the jam it gets extremely rhythmic with the drums just going nuts. It almost sounds like there's double bass drum happening!!! The jam goes completely off the rails becoming entirely unhinged. It's extremely rocking and just falling apart like an avalanche. It's extremely unique and hard to explain as I've never heard another jam like it. My God. X Factor magic all over this mother. Good freaking Lord holy hell.
All in all I would say this second said absolutely destroyed set two of night one. From start to finish this set was just a powerhouse. The whole Light through Sea of Stars + Carini segment was straight up must hear and and the other songs still delivered at a base level.
I'd give this show a solid 4.2 or something like that. It was an excellent show and the second set had me by the seat of my pants. Definitely grab this one!!!
