2018-07-20 George, WA

KILLER setlist tonight, with a 25 minute CDT and a 15 minute Simple!!!

Also the Phish debut of Set Your Soul Free, one of my all-time favorites as far as the recent new songs go!

This looks to be a good one

4 songs in and things feel a notch above the previous 2 shows for sure. Things finally feel like they are "clicking", if that makes sense.

Set Your Soul Free was tad stilted to open with, but it was the debut so it gets leniency. Very enjoyable 10 minutes though!

Wolfman's Brother was pretty chill but jammed out unexpectedly. Not too much, but really enjoyable.

Roggae was just friggin' awesome.

Same with Undermind! This might be the best Undermind I've heard of the 10 or 12 versions I have heard. THIS UNDERMIND RIPS!!!! THIS IS LIKE PARTY TIME ON STEROIDS!
Also, Trey is using all kinds of weird reverse/echo/shimmery kidn of effects which adds some very nice character.

BUT SERIOUSLY THIS UDNERMIND IS FREAKING AWESOME!!!!!

Simple:
Wow, that gave me chills - they just segued from Undermind into Simple so flawlessly like it was 1998 or something.

I love Simple, but I'm not really (yet) a fan of all the "standalone" versions of 3.0
Simple is a song that just begs to come out of another tune, not just started from scratch.
It's like shifting from 1 gear to another vs. starting the engine cold from the off position, ya dig?

AND THIS SIMPLE IS SIMPLY AWESOME :D
THIS SIMPLE IS ONE FOR THE BOOKS!!!! EASILY, MAYBE, THE BEST JAM OF THE 3 SHOWS SO FAR! MUST-HEAR RAGE FEST!

Ya Mar was perfect after Simple. Killer little bass soloing from Gordo. :)

Sand was not as out-there-mind-blowing as Simple was, but for a Type 1 banger, it's a rager!!! Trey is just abusing his axe tonight, really ripping like it's not 2018.

This is sick!

And then...Chalkdust Torture...

Oh boy, here we go...

A very good, energetic reading of the song. About 7 minutes in we dive head first into the Type 2 waters of the deep without any delay! Trey is playing with watery tones and Page has some Meatstick-esque synth blaring going on.

This was maybe the fastest I've ever heard them go from "normal" to "outer space"! I mean, seriously, there was no transition, lol. Had to be planned :p It was like "Ok, the song is over, 1, 2, 3, LETS GO!" (plunges head first off proverbial diving board) :)

Up to 13 minutes now and there isn't much to say yet. Things started very dark but soon they reached lighter areas and now they are staying in very actively jazzy mode, reminiscent of some 1997 bliss jam or something. This could be a Harry Hood jam at this point, let's put it like that.

Very, very nice! The boys are stretching out and letting things flow and its awesome. No rushing here! Just patience - build up and payoff :) This is perfect "staring at the starry night sky" jamming, just totally uplifting and fun.

Around 15 minutes a good amount of ambiance begins to creep in. Shades of 1999/2000 going on. Still bright and uplifting, but we are getting that "Camden '99 Chalkdust" vibe for sure with all the bending of notes and wispy, airy vibes.

The guys slowly kick up the temperature a little bit at a time. Relaxing becomes exuberance. Page and Fish are just hammering away at their respective instruments while Trey is hanging sustained notes in the air like it's the wild west or a pirate trial.

Around 19 minutes now and we are just in full on ROCK mode with Trey playing guitar hero to the fullest - axes in the air, fretboard trills, ugly jamming-out-faces....

The crowd roars its approval at this peak - and I MEAN "PEAK!"

For anyone longing for a bit of "rape your guitar, bang your head" Trey, check this out.

21 minutes and this quick orgasm has finished, being replaced by some delicate picking with delay effects and a Party Time/NICU "beach" vibe and rhythm taking over. Interesting synths and the bass and drums are at the fore now.

CHUNKY SYNTH! Or is that some modular effect on Mike's bass? Bring on the wah pedal, though! Man, at this point they could segue straight into Party Time for realz, lol. Would be perfect :)

23 minutes in and that 1999/2000 Meatstick synth creeps back in, leading us towards much darker, scarier places.

30 seconds left - how are we getting out of this?! Oh....just like that. With a fizzle.

WHAT THE HECK GUYS THAT WAS THE WORST ENDING TO ANY JAM EVER!

BOO!!!!!

Oh well, at least we go straight into Myfe without a stop.....

Ok, so My Friend was excellent. Tons of squealing and murdering going on, haha.

But that segue into Fuego was pure butter!!! Sounded like the same song!

Also, the more I hear the song Fuego, the more it really feels like it could've fit right into 1.0 in the late 90s.
It gives me Carini vibes or something. :)

This Fuego RIPS. Dang, man. Can you guys friggin' imagine if this song existed in 1997-99?! Could've been insane!

P.S. - VLAD THE IMPALER!

Out of Fuego we get a rare Sparkle.

A breath of fresh air, it's just what the doctor ordered - a perfect break from the mind blowing awesomeness of the previous 40 minutes :)

This goes into a very fun Halley's Comet. Not much to say.

Then a pretty good segue into Light! Quite often I hate the segues into Light - the main rhythm of the intro riff doesn't lend itself to many situations and I feel it works better as a standalone track ala Mercury or something.

That being said, this is the worst version of the song I've ever heard - and it's actually Page's fault, best I can tell. I don't know if it was tech issues or what but the whole song is totally jacked up tonight, unfortunately :(

However, the JAM is where it's freaking at!!! They manage to cover more ground in 10 minutes than in that epic Chalkdust!!!

This jam is very light (no pun intended) and airy throughout. Very jazzy and chill. Lots of nice keys and funky bass. Spacious guitar placed at the right spots. You get the drift.

There are some more heavy moments towards the back end, but all in all its a totally different experience than the CDT from earlier.

SKIP THE SONG BUT THIS LIGHT JAM IS MUST HEAR!!!

:)

Man, oh, friggin' man, they decide to tug right at my heart and go into a beautiful Waste. Totally not expected and perfectly placed. I mean, this was the perfect choice out of that jam.

Wow. WOW. WOW! THIS WASTE IS AWESOME!

Waste is my favorite Phish song and I feel like I rarely here great versions, so this one - which is darn near as perfect as the studio take - is just epic.

AWESOME AWESOME AWESOME!

A blistering Rock and Roll to end the main set, and a Tube and Golgi to encore?!

Word of the Night - WOW

Sorry for the exuberant reviews guys, but this show just blew my tiny little mind out the window.
This is absolutely on my list of favorite shows now and I totally see me playing it again in the future.

HOLY FRICKIN CRAP THIS SHOW WAS SPECTACULAR!

Sorry. I'm done now. I'm all spent.  Dude, this first show completely blew my mind. I mean, holy crap, this was one of the best shows I can remember hearing.

Yea, yea I say that about every show, but this was one of those!
