2018-07-21 George, WA

With 7/20 being one of the most incredible shows I've ever heard, I can only expect to be let down by this show regardless of how fantastic the setlist is.

Thankfully, the opening Party Time is great and gets us in the mood.

Many 3.0 PYITE's suck, so let's pray this one don't!

So, the boys don't butcher PYITE and it was pretty good overall - Trey hit all the notes in time but was doing that annoying thing he's been doing where he picks the strings very quietly to the point it sounds like he's missing notes.

GRRRR TREY :(

That being said, all good in the end :)

Things are a little sluggish up through now though but with Mike's Groove the guys finally "lock in" and we are right on course!

Mike's Song is fine but the jam is great . Starts with a lengthy bass solo from Gordo before Trey breaks out the Leslie for some watery depth-diving.
Very "Frankenstein" - they could've launched right into it from this part. Trey then turns the Leslie off and lets it rip (tastefully!) A wonderful 7 minutes of terrific jamming. Really great little jam!

Then we get a rare (at this point) Hydrogen for a change! YAY! :)

annnnndddddddd here. WE. GO!!!!!!!

Boom! Into Weekapaug!

Ok, well, not really. That was one of the slowest/draggiest entries into Groove I've ever heard. I don't know what's going on with Fish tonight, but he is dragging tempos like crazy, I swear. It's ok though because there is some nice jamming in it and it's excessively upbeat and jubilant.

Good stuff :)

Up next we get a new Mike song (see what I did there ;) ). I really enjoy this tune "Infinite". Wish they played it more once in a while. A really, really nice jam evolves out of it around 4 minutes in. Man, is tonight the night for short, contained jamming or what?! The jam is very 1997 for sure. I can totally see this evolving into a 20 minute Ghost-type of jam.

Wasted potential...

Just like this It's Ice. Performed pretty perfectly, I always love this tune (top 10 favorite of mine!) BUT GOSH DANGIT TREY YOU HAVE A PICK IN YOUR HAND SO IF YOU ARE HITTING THE NOTES ALREADY MAKE THEM AUDIBLE, GOSH DARN IT! WTF?! :realmad::realmad::realmad::realmad::realmad:

Thankfully they redeem Trey's folly with some funky jamming and a nice conclusion with a perfect (and totally unseen!) segue into Divided Sky!

SICK

Please nail this one, Trey. Please!

Thankfully he and the rest of the band do nail it!!! Hard!!! One of the best recent DS's I've heard - no butchering here! :D :D :D

After a raging Cavern, set 1 is over.

A mixed bag, the song selection was superb for my taste, but the relaxed vibe was mis-matched with the material, often making you go "come on guys, where's the fire at?!"

For what its worth, this Set 2 opening Tweezer from 7/21/18 is AWESOME!!!
It doesn't go anywhere crazy, but it's an absolutely ragetastic 15 minutes of pure energy. It is the fire that was absent from Set 1

Tweezer>Golden Age

EXACTLY what you would expect - 28 minutes of type 2 funky jamming, but loaded with fire and energy and then ripcorded into Farmhouse.

3.0 in a nutshell, amirite? :D :p

Nah, the segue was actually pretty excellent and we haven't had a ballad all show, so while I'd prefer it later in the set it's not a nightmare like it could be.

Also, I quite like the song so.... BUT, on paper, this next 30 minutes looks like it might be a nightmare, haha

Farmhouse>Piper (3.0 Piper is not 2.0 Piper!)>Prince Caspian (Ohhhh, to be repetitive!)>Velvet Sea.

A ballad sandwich, lol. I like all the songs but, hmmmm. Not so sure 'bout this, haha. We shall see!

Already though, Farmhouse is excellent, loaded with Leslie playing from Trey and a gorgeous keys from Page. A really, really wonderful rendition! Gentle as the breeze!

SHAME ON ME FOR DISSING THIS PIPER BEFORE HEARING IT BECAUSE IT IS FREAKING AWESOME!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Ok, so Tweezer>Golden Age was a ragefest.

Farmhouse was beautiful.

Piper BLEW ME AWAY! Absolutely a blast!!! Seek it out! :)

Prince Caspian was Prince Caspian, but surprisingly, the final 2 minutes was just a giant explosion of epic intensity. Not your typical "boring" Caspian!

Velvet Sea was Velvet Sea but now we are in Rise/Come Together and peaking again.

This is one of my favorites of the newer batch of songs and this one was pretty enjoyable. I'd love a proper studio version, actually.

This version is pretty sick - it just peaks forever, with a lengthy solo from Trey loaded with never-ending sustained notes held in the air forever.

The peak continues on into a barnburner Antelope. I love Antelope as much as the next guy, but it often seems very "samey" for me from one version to the next (For the most part!) and you generally have an idea of what is probably gonna happen.

Well, this is that. But on steroids. Like 1994. :)

I mean, this is just FIRE on top of FIRE on top of FIRE!!!!

If you like a good Antelope check this one out!!! :D

Encore:

Bug and Tweeprise.

Both nice and enjoyable. You know what you are getting.

All in all, another excellent show. This was more up and down than the first night, but the highlights were totally worth it.

Seek out:

Infinite
Divided Sky
Tweezer>
Golden Age
Piper>
Prince Caspian
