The one-show-a-week 2012 run continue with 6/28/12 Noblesville
Been running truck like a ragdoll all week. Up at 5 am. Get home at 7pm. In bed at 9pm. Rinse repeat....
Absolutely bonkers setlist tonight!!!!
Set 1 -
The Birdwatcher - Is this a "standard"? New acapella number! Always welcome!
The Curtain With - The "proper" opener, the crowd goes nuts when
they begin! A very inspired rendition that is nailed on all fronts and
is a blast to sit through. Awesome Curtain!
F Your Face -
The Old Home Place - Awesome to hear.
Pebbles and Marbles - Awesome.
Weigh - Awesome
Chalkdust Torture - Awesome
Wolfman's Brother - Awesome
Cool It Down - Awesome
Tweezer - Awesome
Tela - Awesome
>Stealing Time - Awesome
All in all, this set was...guess the word....awesome.
So last night I did play through all of 6/28/12 in one go and enjoyed it
all VERY much, but during the 2nd set my mind was getting preoccupied
with other things and it turned into highly enjoyable background noise
that I wasn't in the mood to review. I was just tired and all that jazz.
Properly listening to set 2 right now

Set 2
Mike's Song - Wonderfully raging full-band interplay on this. You
feel like if any one member stopped playing the whole thing would fall
apart. Of course Trey is soloing hard but it goes with the flow rather
than standing above the other three guys. Really strong!!!
>McGrupp - Awesome segue/song placement!!! That transition
sounded like something right out of 1995!!! Another absolutely terrific
version. Check out the interplay between Page, Mike and Trey all locked
in together on the jam, playing as one. Very impressive. Killer
McGrupp!!!! The jam peaks very angrily and aggressively.
Back On The Train - Somehow, some way, this angry burst of danger
morphs seamlessly into BOTT. I had to go back and replay it a few
times, haha. Extra guitar-hero energy in this one! Check out Trey
ripping it up on the wah pedal!!! At 6:20 things suddenly get DARK.
Not Fukuoka 2000 BOTT dark, but definitely into the Type II area for
sure. Page is still delivering beautifully uplifting piano runs while
Trey starts doing ambient whale/bird call sirens. Its extremely cool but
also extremely unsettling!!! I mean, when I was drifting last
night this definitely made me sit up and go "WHAT IS THIS?!". By 7:45
the keyboards come out, the rhythm has changed and we are in a
full-blown outer space drift-jam, floating in the ether. WHAT THE HELL IS THIS AT 10 MINUTES IN!!!!???? No! NO! NO IT CANT BE! STOP IT GUYS! PLEASE! DONT DO THIS!!!!.....
>Hold Your Head Up/Sexual Healing Vacuum solo/Bike/HYUP - TUCK! TUCK! TUCK! TUCK! TUCK! TUCK! TUCK!
Ok, as far as Fishman segments go this was actually very fun and I'm
sure a blast in person. Normally I just want to skip past them but it's
surprisingly enjoyable in the context of this show.
>Weekapaug Groove - "Weekapaug featured Trey on drums and
Fish on guitar (while teasing DEG) at the beginning saying "I think
we're a better band this way, don't you?" followed by Trey and Fish on
drums together, then Trey back on guitar." Awesome stuff!!!! Total party yo
The percussion jam when they are switching roles back is great. Mike
gets a bass solo and then Page goes nuts too. Insanely freaking great.
>Prince Caspian - Out of a hot and wacky WG into a perfectly
calming Prince Caspian. At this point it feels like the end of the set,
but we still have 50 or so minutes to go! Great little Prince C.
Perfectly relaxing after the zaniness that preceeded it. Nothing special
but a very nice transition piece into the beast we are about to get...
>Waves - The jamming is A+. If someone wants to know what a
picture-perfect version of Waves sounds like, tell them to proceed
directly here. It's just SO. FREAKING. GOOD!!! UGH!! All of the playing is just ON POINT and the energy is out wazoo!!!!!!! Weird to say a Waves is HOT but, this Waves is HOT!!!!
Around 5 minutes in everyone is raging hard and Trey very slowly starts
to introduce effects and feedback, seemingly seeing what way he wants
to proceed. By 7 minutes the jam has evolved into Trey doing wah pedal
bursts and leading the guys into a slightly ambient yet still
spastically funky vibe. Page jumps on the keys, Gordo is laying it down
thick and at 7:55 Trey clearly hints at Frankie Says!!! I
wouldn't want a ripcord, but damn that could've been a terrific segue!!
Instead he leads onwards, dynamiclly placing his notes with purpose Fish
remains nutzo on the drums and Page is laying down pretty piano swirls
behind all of this. It's like being in the eye of the hurricane. But
then Gordo hits his synth bass effects and nukes us with a few
bomberoonies. Nasty! But still pretty! Huh. It's dark yet light at the
same time. There is definitely some X Factor creepign through tonight.
At 10:20 things start to calm down significantly and Trey hints at
Frankie again but instead we get a few minutes of ambience. No more
drums, just cymbal washes and outer space synths. By 12 minutes we are
firmly in the Halloween Spooky Scary Black Hole Abyss for about 30
seconds....
>Bug - Out of the destruction Trey slowly introduces Bug as
the jam is dying down. Thank christ Fishman comes in on the beat and we
have a proper segue, lmao. That segue out and into Bug was one of the most satisfying transitions ever....Very powerful version ending with a psychedelic meltdown transition into...
>David Bowie - HOLY CRAP!
>Show of Life - Is SOL. But I love it and you should too. Always a great closer.
Tweeprise - No explanation needed.
Holy schnike!!! All in all this show was DA BOMB, man!!!! The
first set was great, loaded with rarities, but the 2nd set was maybe in
the top 2 or 3 of the tour so far. Just pure awesomeness from start to
finish. As a whole show this is definitely near the very top of the heap
so far! DO NOT SKIP THIS GIG!!!!
Back On The Train and Waves are both MUST HEAR.
