2026-04-30 Las Vegas, NV - The Sphere, #7

 4 30 26

Las Vegas

The Sphere #7

Set 1

An interesting choice of The Wedge to ease us into the show tonight. A strong but typical reading. Nothing special but good energy and enthusiasm and everyone is locked in. Good stuff.

A super fun NICU follows. It continues what The Wedge began, keeping up the "laid back but not sleepy" vibe. Another "not must hear but worth checking out" reading, Leo goes BONKERS! I can't say this version as a whole is must hear but his soloing definitely is! Lets get it!

Halfway to the Moon is up next. Now, 3rd song in a row, you're starting to think "Oh okay this is going to be one of those B+ nights, I gotcha....". The song itself kinda drags tonight, imo. But it reaches a light must hear level for me. The back section is just terrific, with Trey unleashing some absolutely top tier melodic soloing. It will definitely make you perk up! Basically it starts sleepy and then ends majestically.
.
If you're going to keep the down low vibe going what better choice to continue with than a 15-minute Leaves. And it's an absolutely fantastic reading! The jam begins upbeat like normal but within about 30 seconds Trey accidentally hits a wrong note and the jam shifts into a dark and minor key area. One of those"thank God!", happy accident kind of moments. Because otherwise we definitely would still be in the upbeat blissy whatever for a good while I am certain. But this immediately shoved the jam right into dark robo Godzilla stomp whatever territory. Dark and menacing slowly creeping across the stage like a nightcrawler on a mission. HOLY CRAP THIS IS WHAT A MONSTER SOUNDS LIKE. X FACTOR MAGIC OUT THE EFFING ASS. JUST A RIDICULOUS DARK PSYCHEDELIC MELTDOWN FOR THE AGES. No seriously this is Mexico 2024 Axilla tier - And considering everything that has come before in this run that is saying a crap ton.

Easily in League with Jones Beach 2022 as the greatest version ever played. And again, thats saying a lot. This version is astronomically out of the park. What in the love of Satan.... And the transition back into the song at the end is just so smoothly executed as to give you goosebumps. Oh my God, my head is in my hands What the hell....

After that legitimate all timer reading of Leaves, We get a gnarly and raging 555. It's nothing special but it definitely delivers the goods but unfortunately feels like it's over before it's begun.

Dropping back down immediately afterwards into Dirt. Okay this has to be intentional. This choice of songs in this order, giving the whole set a low key and laid-back feel. Trey knew what he was doing picking these songs for this set. If this wasn't intentional then this is one of the biggest "why?!" Experiences I've had with setlist construction with modern Phish. Anywho, its an absolutely lovely version played absolutely perfectly. Nothing to say, but its wonderful as always.

FINALLY, we get the FIRST TRUE ACTUAL BURST OF ENERGY THIS ENTIRE SET (besides the Leaves jam) with a dang 14 minute Punch!! Played very fast, I believe this is the longest one yet but I'm not certain. The song itself is played excellently though rather hesitantly by Trey. Zero flubbage but he also sounds cautious throughout. Basically I'm complaining about nothing. The jam is legitimately terrific and reaches the damn 8 minute mark. They've been getting longer with seemingly each version and I think this might actually be the longest to date. Some of the intro jams have felt like random meandering whatever while others have sounded like actual cohesive jam sections. This is very much the latter and I think it's my favorite yet. Great effects usage and interplay between Page and Trey. I'm calling this a must here version. It's killer. Definitely must hear!

This slightly oddball set comes to a close with a Golgi apparatus. Golgi is Golgi.

All in all, this was definitely an oddball set. If I had to pick one of the seven shows so far, Id call this the weakest first set most likely. But it definitely wasn't anything approaching a bad set, It was just one of those "these songs should not all be together in the same set" kind of sets.

Ballad/low key vibes heaviness gave it a very relaxed and mellow kind of feel. As I mentioned earlier in the set it almost felt intentional. The playing throughout was very good to excellent so I have no complaints on that front. This set was certainly no kind of abomination, it was simply chill. A STRONG B+ kinda set with two big, shining diamonds.

Punch and Leaves are true must hears, with Leaves being a legitimate all timer, in running for GOAT status, tied with or 2nd only to Jones Beach 2022 for my money. And shoutouts to Halfway as well.

Set 2

The 2nd half tonight opens with a 16.5 minute ASIHTOS. Always great in an opening slot! And the song Sound sounds genuinely excellent tonight. Oftentimes it sounds hesitant but tonight it sounds confident and full of spunk. The type 1 jamming starts promisingly enough for the first minute or so in that typical dark kind of underwater murkiness you love and hope for.
-------Unfortunately around the four and a half minute mark it morphs into chill bliss rock. Gross. Thankfully it actually has a lot of character. Fishman takes total charge doing these cool rimshot patterns, the jam taking on a layered and atmospheric kind of ethereal vibe. Some background loops going on etc.
-------Very slowly and organically the power begins to build and the jam gets more rocking. It's a very cool slow build however and they sure take their time easing into it. This is actually extremely cool. It's like they are straddling that line between the dark and the light but not committing to either. It's in that gray area where could easily go in either direction. -------Eventually back in full type one rocking zone, Trey doing melodic sustained lines while Page echoes him with watery keys underneath. By the 10-minute mark we are fully back into the original dark aquatic kind of jam. Super murky. The flow and evolution of this jam is just unreal. There's no meandering and it's moving the entire time. Its just flowing like butter however, smooth like Steely Dan.
--------By the 11 minute mark Trey is on super dark and fiery wah pedal abuse and we are sinking into the abyss. My goodness this is just glorious, some definite X Factor all over this sucker.
--------Around the 12-minute mark, Fishman takes charge of the jam changing the beat into a more shuffling kind of rhythm. The band follows suit and you think something is going to happen similar to the Dick's 2024 Ruby waves or something. That level of insanity is avoided but the jam absolutely takes on a new character and enters a new kind of zone that is very rhythmic with lots of repeated chord slashing and fiery rhythms from Fish.
---------How in the world this wouldn't be jam-charted I have no clue because it's type 2 for sure and absolutely an amazing jam. I know there was online debate over this. If this isn't high quality and worthy of wider recognition then I don't know what is. This reminds me of the Mexico 2020 Carini. Just a slow transition into an amorphous blob of darkness.
--------Finally around the 15 minute mark we shift gears again and slowly transition into a more shuffling kind of rocking zone, bit by bit, leaving the abyss behind. The jam kind of dies a quick death out of nowhere and we move on into a 24 minute Wave of Hope....

That was a PHENOMENAL reading!!! Genuinely, I dont know how anyone couldnt see the quality of that. Absolutely jam chart worthy, imho. Not an all timer, but DAMN was it fantastic! Tight and gooey and heavy. Patience and flow and the wazoo.... I CANNOT STRESS ENOUGH HOW KILLER THAT WAS.

So Wave is up next. The song itself is a spectacular reading, just exploding with energy, all uptempo and blazing like a comet, if you will. Killer. Just loaded with extra headbanging spunk and pizazz. You can just tell this one is going to go somewhere special!
-------The song rages hard and fast to about the 7-minute mark where the jam begins in earnest. The jam enters this kind of really fast and upbeat but rocking rhythmic zone. Upbeat bliss rock but things are shifting. Fishman starts doing cool snare roll patterns and the synthesizers come out for some gooey background washing. Trey begins his ethereal melodic major key soloing and the late '90s haze starts to appear ever so slowly.
-------This goes until the 11 minute mark, whereupon Trey gets some staccato notes setting a background loop and the jam shifts into a dark area. Very cool, intense and still rocking but definitely dark. Unfortunately the darkness is all too brief and they quickly shift out into another cool section, this time heavily rocking a nice little up and down motif all together as one. And then just like that we are quickly back into upbeat bliss rocking like nothing ever happened lol. Dang it Trey!
--------It doesn't matter though because there's no meandering in this jam and it sounds inspired throughout, never losing a beat and always sounding on its way to somewhere. Upbeat Bliss rock with a purpose, if you will, similar to the Forest Hills 2025 Carini. The kind of thing I normally would bitch about but today I'm absolutely enthralled by.
-------By 14 minutes it sounds like they are slowly building the foundation for an upcoming peak section. The jam lifts off and Trey is just soaring. And around the 1430 Mark we do hit that peak nice and hard. Just blazing Sky High peakage to the face. Pure spine tingling Magic. Let's freaking go, this freaking rules!!!
-------Up and down the peak goes for what feels like several minutes, just refusing to die, blasting us in the face over and over and over and over reminding us who is the freaking greatest band in the entire universe! Just one sustained note after another. We are soaring through the multiverse, on a rocket heading towards the sun at a million miles an hour. We are approaching ludicrous speed!!!
-----Finally around the 17 minute mark the peak subsides and morphs into this really cool but unsettling and abstract rhythmic kind of stop start pattern. Slowly the jam kind of winds its way to a natural conclusion point and you think it's going to end. Thankfully Trey pushes through and eggs them on and they continue jamming!!! Around the 19-minute mark, by this point the jam has slowly morphed into full-blown dark ambience. Fishman keeps popping in and out of the jam rattling his drums and symbols, dropping out, then coming back in again.
-------The jam sounds like a swirling mess of chaos, akin to the dying groans and grinds of some robotic android. Not quite as ridiculous as a Melt jam, but something sounding very similar to say a late '80s Grateful Dead space section or something. That's the best way I can put it. It's like a slow but steady deconstruction into an abstract strangeness that's hard to explain. A hazy cloud of ethereal avant-garde noise scape creation. Actually you know what it sounds a lot like?? That late night, blip bloop, strange kind of fade out whatever sleepy jam in the Big Cypress version of Sand. You know, super late into the jam when it gets the quadrophonic toppling thing going and Trey is on the pitch shifter and it gets all weird. That's what it sounds like but on a more angsty level. Lots of Zappa type vocal sound effects and robo blips and blops accented by fishman's ratat symbols. And it just winds itself to a true clothes from here....

Hot damn, some amazing X Factor on that one!!! Absolutely a must-hear piece of music they go far out into the multiverse as deep as you can take a Space Jam. And the Bliss rocking was incredible and adventurous throughout with a spectacular peak that should have your jaw on the floor. This was an absolutely incredible reading up there with the very best ever played in my humble opinion. Hot damn.

And absolutely perfectly we segue out with one of the smoothest transitions of all time into Prince Caspian. And damn if that's not the most welcome Prince Caspian I've heard in a hot minute, landing us back on Earth after that alien outer space adventure. And oh. My. Freaking. Sweet Sally in the Alley. They drop the mother effing HYDROGEN bomb. Yes Caspian is always hot and it's been on a definite bender the last couple years just slaying left and right, but even by that metric this one is just loaded with magic!!!! Purely type 1 they shred this to absolute oblivion raging it as hard as is humanly possible.
It is actually emotionally palpable in my opinion. This truly felt like a 1990s version where it slides out of a different song and just slaps you in the face, hitting you perfectly deep within. I know I've been saying all timer a lot, but throw this in the all-timer Hall of Fame regarding type 1 versions of Caspian. This is a version everybody should be raving about until the end of time up there with the very best ever played. 10 out of freaking 10 I cannot stress enough how ridiculous this reading is. Oh my god. What is even going on anymore.

They follow the last 48 minutes of destruction with a very welcome and needed Lonely Trip. Again, A+ on the set flow and construction this run. Man, that was immaculate. There's a cute moment of flubbage from Trey where he gets off-kilter for a moment. Immediately remedied with Pages soul punching piano soloing. Oh my freaking God. I'm not crying, You're crying! No actually I'm weeping.... This is too much.... This song always makes me cry..... A whopping 8 minutes long This has to be the longest version ever played no?!? I'm calling it must hear. It was emotional enough to make me literally have to pull over and start crying thinking about my own problems and things passed and regrets and the good times gone by there are no longer here.....

They lead us out of the the melancholy with a 15-minute Runaway Jim. Jim is absolutely incredible!!!. The run of must hear music continues. X Factor in spades, this one just annihilates, all the way until the 9-minute mark. Around the 9-minute mark it goes legitimately type two!!! Shifting randomly into a rhythmic kind of Scent of a Mule type whatever dark jam. That's the only way I can describe it. They spend four glorious minutes exploring this strange area with loops and robo wah and weird patterns. It doesn't go into black hole oblivion but it's reminiscent of the Pittsburgh 2019 version for sure
They definitely go off the rails and it's incredible. It's this weird and unsettling kind of dark whatever. Again it's hard to explain unless you're listening to it. And the transition back into the song proper at the 13-minute mark is just mind-blowingly smooth. I mean you go "what the hell, How was that so smooth?!?!". Another 1.0 level version in my opinion. Stupendous stupendous stupendous. No seriously say it again it's stupendous. Just loaded with X Factor this is phenomenal. THIS JIM IS FRIGGIN RUNAWAY, LETD GO. HOLY CRAP THIS SET IS SMASHING!

Out of Jim and into a RIDICULOUSLY funky Sally. Yeah it's always funky and rocking but this one begins like that from the outset and is just loaded with extra vinegar throughout. An A+ reading with some terrific vocal scatting throughout. Everyone is on point and just crushing it. I'm calling this must hear again (No legitimately). F me..

Drift closes the set, unfortunately anticlimactically - damn it was almost a perfect set!!! This version is very good and energetic and there is absolutely nothing wrong with it but it's simply is not very impressive at the same time. That's all. It's just an average excellent middle of the road reading.

The encore begins splendidly with, honestly, what has to be the GOAT The Sloth. If such a thing can even exist. Red hot though a little bit sloppy, but nothing that's egregious. This one is absolutely exploding with red hot lava energy. No seriously it's headbanger Paradise. Around the 3-minute mark somehow they shift into type 1 jam mode and they go nuclear on it for several minutes.
THEY LEGITIMATELY LITERALLY JAM SLOTH FOR THE FIRST TIME EVER IN 40 YEARS. WHAT IN THE LOVE OF GAMEHENDGE IS GOING ON. It's just a red hot type 1 rage fest sun explosion type of jam but it's so molten lava fantastic that's not even funny. And it's so volcanic that it even reaches a legitimate meltdown peak explosion which you can't fathom would even happen. The hype around this version is very real and very much deserved and anybody saying otherwise is just a negative hater. Holy moly 5,000 out of 10 rendition. There is no universe where it could get better than this unless they took it into outer space for 25 minutes or something.MUST HEAR AT ALL COSTS!!!

As if the second half of the show couldn't get any more perfect, It concludes appropriately with The Squirming Coil. Of course! And its absolutely immaculate, one of the best readings ive heard in a while. Super delicate and dynamic, very soft and quiet at all the perfect moments. Just fantastic, truly. Everything is on point and the emotion factor is high. And that ending piano solo of course.... I was blessed to experience it at Charleston 2019 and it's something everybody needs to witness once in their life. Beautiful. Good enough for a must hear, imo. And honestly, dead ass seriously, this made me cry once again. My God the emotion.

All in all, an outrageous 2nd set! LITERALLY I think EVERYTHING from ASIHTOS through Coil, minus Drifting, is must hear level. This set just refused to let up. X factor was shining in spades. Compared to other sets this run it didn't get as out there into the Netherworld but as a complete entire piece I actually think this might have one the award for best singular set of the whole run so far, if you can believe that!!!

For the most part the playing was super tight aside from a few moments from Trey, The flow was immaculate like melted, And it really gave me a late 90s Phish show vibe at times. The FLOW!! The set construction was just perfect I thought.

The 3.6 rating it has on.net is egregiously low. Yes ratings are subjective and don't mean anything blah blah blah. But if you're asking me I think this show is worthy of at least a strong and solid 4.0, maybe even a 4.1 based on the strength of set two. There was nothing wrong with that one it was just chill like Toronto 2019 or something. And even then it still had that damn Leaves and Punch!!!

Don't listen to the naysayers on this one This show is excellent and deserves far more love than it is receiving. Other shows this run had far higher highs but I don't think any have had the emotional impact and flow of this concert. I love it.

:D

The Sphere, Night 6

Set 1

You know it's going to be a good one when you get a rare Timber, let alone in the opening slot! And it's an absolutely fantastic version also. Good enough for me to give it the must hear status. It's very high energy and tight but other than the typical fire, It has a rather kind of blissfulness about it that makes it stand out in my opinion. A terrific, terrific opener.

Following suit, Moma Dance kinda becomes Timber part 2. I don't know if it reaches the same level but it's still definitely excellent and it has a unique kind of vibe to it. It's got this really smooth and fluid feel about it that is unusual. Definitely a gooey kinda reading. Definitely a stand out version for sure.

This continues into The Final Hurrah. That fluidity is in full glorious swing on this one. This is the best one in God knows when in my opinion. Probably on par with Charleston 2025. It's just terrific and they jam the crap out of it, stretching it very far without leaving the type 1 box. Some very cool textural looper stuff in the background, and Gordo is laying waste throughout. Must hear!

The first TRUE must hear monster of the night comes in the form of an absolutely satanic, 17 minute Axilla! This one does exactly what you hope for and more. The regular meltdown at the end quickly goes next level. This turns into a crazy kind of Godzilla stomp destruction scenario. Fishman doing unique marching kind of drum work. 2021 Style synthesizers abound. Trey Going absolute ham on the robot effects for what seems like five or six minutes. They take this as far out into the heaviness as I think they've ever taken a version since the unbelievable Mexico 2024 reading. This is some definite X Factor magic of the highest order and will be remembered as one of the highlights of the whole 2026 Sphere run when all is said and done. HOLY CRAP THIS IS INCREDIBLE YOU HAVE TO HEAR THIS IT WILL FREAKING DESTROY YOU!!!

As if that wasn't enough they keep the craziness going into a 17 minute Cities!!! The song itself sounds great but the jam is nothing to really shout about in my opinion. I mean it is genuinely excellent but it's so incredibly one note as to be frustrating. Basically it spends the entire time in upbeat melodic bliss rock zone. It does have some really excellent majestic areas where the band are funking good underneath Treys bliss rock giving it an interesting flavor at times but it only lasts so long before they divert to the typical "extended type 1". I will admit though that my issues with it are mostly my own and objectively this is a terrific reading that is definitely worthy of Must Hear status.

Following that, The set concludes with strong but standard readings of Horn, The Well and My Soul.

All in all I would definitely call this an excellent set. It started off strong and basically stayed they're even if Axilla was the only truly adventurous number. Still, Timber, Moma and Final Hurrah Are all top tier type 1 readings, while Axilla Is a genuine all-timer and Wave is a majestic soaring flight into the sky.

There isn't much else to say because it's just an excellent set all the way around. Great stuff.

Set 2

Set 2 opens with an 11 minute Halley's Comet. A fine version. Its got a really nice, but shortish, jam. Very hazy, Page layers it with synth washes while Trey kicks in some loopers while bliss rocking on top. Its really great and fades out perfectly. A light must hear - one of the "small treasures" of the run for sure.

Rising out of the haze we go into a 15 minute Blaze On. AND HOLY CRAP WHAT A FREAKING VERSION IT IS!!! It rocks like a mother effer just destroying the universe. Everybody is locked in so damn tight, tighter than Harry Houdini in his underwater straight jacket hell. This is one of those amazing "type 1+" readings that doesn't go type two but at the same time sees everybody going absolutely EXTRA on the jam in the greatest way possible. Gooey to a fault and just loaded with extra pizazz and eyebrows, as Frank Zappa would say. X Factor magic all over the sucker. Must hear in the greatest way possible. I CANNOT PUT INTO WORDS HOW ABSOLUTELY FANTASTIC THIS VERSION IS AND HOW MUCH YOU NEED IT IN YOUR LIFE AT ALL COSTS!

A 27 minute Chalkdust is next and wouldn't you know it We have another full-blown all-timer on our hands. The song itself sounds good and is pretty high energy without blowing the roof off, but it's driving good and you know we are going to get something special.
The jam begins around 6 minutes rocking good before going fully type 2 around the 7-minute mark. It dies down a lot into a hazy and blissy kind of upbeat yet driving Bliss rock area. Trey sets loopers and everybody noodles over this soundscape for a good while. It's really excellent and definitely inspired and sounds like an outgrowth of the end of the Halley's jam.
Around the 11 minute mark Trey slowly starts to rock harder and the jam makes a shift. A dark heat starts to take over the jam. Listen to Fish accenting everyone perfectly, the whole band working together like a cell. Quickly however it reverts back into a dreamy upbeat kind of zone. It's not meandering though and sounds like a jam with purpose - you know it's going somewhere and you can do nothing but sink into your seat and go along for the ride.
Around 12:30 the jam takes on a really cool "Midnight in the desert" vibe that I'm not sure how else to explain. Some light pitch shifting and looper usage with synthy accents and noodles. Lots of tasteful ambient squiggly type whatever. The jam is slowly phasing in and out between proper music and an ambient soundscape direction. It's not there yet but they are taking their damn sweet time with it and it's absolutely glorious.
It's not meandering it's patient. There is a huge difference. It's driving yet atmospheric and textural all at the same time. It's incredibly cool and I can't remember another jam like it. It's very very late '90s especially let's say 2000 era in my opinion. Desert Space jamming. Listen to Fish absolutely driving and owning this jam with all of his accents and great fills on all his different little percussion bits and bobs. He is using his entire kit let's put it like that. And it's just magical. Trey gets on the robo filter for some light robo playing.
This glorious section goes all the way to the 16-minute mark!!! Finally, it somehow begins to shift downwards and enters full on darkness, smoothly but quickly in the space of around 30 seconds. YO WHAT IS GOING ON THIS JAM IS FREAKING MAGICAL. This is one of the most perfectly patient and cohesive jams I've ever heard. Just absolute patience and inspiration and everybody working together. The definition of X Factor magic. Not a second wasted.
By 17 minutes things are just pure robot darkness. The jam is still driving and is not deconstructed but they are descending further into the outer space wormhole by the second. Listen to Fishman going absolutely bananas! Then around 17:30 they come out the other end and straight into uplifting hard rocking. Let's build this peak, suckers!!!
The jam soars into the sky, reminiscent of the Boulder 2025 Crosseyed or the Camden 1999 Chalkdust. You know exactly what I'm talking about. Atmospheric yet rocking and absolutely the definition of SOARING. It just doesn't stop and keeps going and going and going and going and going!!!!
Around the 21 minute mark the jam takes on this grindy and dirty kind of vibe despite absolutely still soaring through the sky. It's like we are crashing at a million miles an hour heading for impact blazing like a comet if you will. Oh my freaking god this is the greatest thing I've ever heard in my entire life. My jaw is on the floor, actually it's through the floor. They are just grinding it and grinding it and grinding it. This is some 1990s type jamming right here all day long.
Oh my freaking God I have Goosebumps What in the F. Where in the hell did they pull this from. Word cannot begin to come close to explaining the insane ridiculousness of this jam. All my freaking God. This is just beyond nasty. This section goes freaking forever lasting all the way until about the 24 minute mark!!!!! At that point the blissful peaking subsides and turns into a dark and grindy kind of meltdown wash of sound. We are talking vocal samples and grinding loops and just dark atmospheric shredding etc power drill territory if you will. We don't get three orange whips we get about 40 of them. And with that the jam comes to a beautifully perfect and patient close, spending a few minutes in pure spacey ambience, slowly fading out.....

OH MY FREAKING GOD WHAT IN THE HELL WAS THAT. IF THAT IS NOT IN THE JAM OF THE YEAR TOURNAMENT BY THE END OF THIS YEAR I WILL BE SHOCKED. EVEN THIS EARLY ON I KNOW THAT IS A CONTENDER. HOLY FREAKING MAGICAL MOLY. WHAT DO YOU EVEN SAY ABOUT A GYM LIKE THAT. THAT'S A ONCE IN 5 YEARS JAM.

Great choice of a 17 minute Mercury follow that outer space excursion! A really good version, The jam spends its first long section in another low key, blissy noodle zone. Very nice and quite lovely. Around 13 minutes Trey jumps on the wah and delay pedal. The jam takes a very heavy turn and basically turns into volume two of the Blaze On jam!! A few fantastic hard rocking minutrs follow before a really lousy ending. The jam goes type 2 for about 20 glorious seconds before Trey axes it out of nowhere. I want to call this must hear. In the wake of the surrounding material it probably isn't but just note that it is still highlight worthy.

Following that, we get Waves. As usual, The song itself sounds under rehearsed. But that's pretty much the only fault. The X Factor magic strikes again and they deliver an absolutely sky-high rendition. During the jam everybody locks in tight and the magic is flowing big time. The end section where everyone syncs up perfectly in returns to the jam is so damn tight it's not even funny. Basically this starts shaky and then coalesces into something wonderful. Just absolute rocking carnage. Definitely a must hear performance. Eventually the song ends, going into a really interesting minute or so of pure dark ambience out of nowhere. Must hear. It's fantastic.

Following a typically blazing About to Run, they up the ante again with a 13 minute Ghost. This one is SPECTACULAR!!! As far as "in the box, modern type 1" versions go, this is top shelf. Extra heavy from the start, everyone is laying HARD into the gritty funkiness, full force. FIREFUNK if you will. Just absolutely wah pedal abuse, etc. A very heavy and GRIMY reading of the song . There isn't much to say because it basically just annihilates. But it's got wonderful color to it and isn't just your standard type 1 rocking version. I mean it is but it's got so much color and character to it it's not even funny. Just nuclear funk Rock if you will. Or something like that. Some definite X Factor on it in my opinion. Must hear!
What a way to end the set!

The encores consist of a powerful Bug into a typically raging First Tube. Uninspired choices but both are strong readings bursting with energy. Actually, First Tube is just NUCLEAR BOMB. To the point where it's actually surprising. Of course this song is the usual Go to shredfest show ender, but tonight its like they turned on the nitro and slammed it into overdrive! I'm dead serious when saying this is about twice as hot as most normal versions. And I'm shocked to find myself saying it's absolutely must hear!!! :D

All in all, this was another killer set. From start to finish there wasnt a single weak point, aside from the ending to Mercury (b.s.!). Chalkdust, Ghost, Halley>Blaze....maybe Mercury as well. Those are all must hear readings. Chalkdust is the definition of a monster - I think Mexico 2024 might have just met its match. No, seriously. And that Blaze On?! Damn, son...

All that being, said I think the nearly 4.3 rating on.net is accurate. Set one started strong and then slipped into the ordinary in the back half while set to boasted amazing A++ readings when things connected but had a couple spots of uncertainty with an uninspired choice of encore songs. My problems was set to are basically extreme nitpicking just for the sake of finding something to complain about though so just ignore that....

THAT CHALKDUST.
THAT BLAZE ON.
THAT GHOST.
THAT FIRST TUBE.

:D

2026-04-24 Las Vegas, NV - The Sphere, #5

 4 24 26 Las Vegas

Night five at the sphere opens with the first TMWSIY since New Year's 2023! Talk about a sick opener yo. It starts rather shaky definitely sounding like the guys haven't played it in two and a half years (If I remember correctly....). There isn't much to say. They do sync up about halfway through thankfully and just when it gets going the composition closes right on a dime

Immediately without a moment to spare they launch beautifully into The Lizards. Listening back later I'm sure this won't feel like anything special, But for some reason this morning this version is absolutely hitting me right in the face. Maybe thinking about the TMWSIY>Lizards from 2023 run has got me all emotional I don't know. But man did it make me start crying big time. I had to pull over. This version is played to perfection. It sounds extra enthusiastic and everybody hits their parts perfectly. In the grand scheme is it must hear? Probably not? For emotional resonance?!
Absolutely.

Up next is a 20 minute Set Your Soul Free Like it's 2018 again. This version is really hot and extremely TIGHT. Not like it's a hard song to play or anything but they are absolutely rocking. Great version of the song itself! The jam takes a while to get going, meandering badly through a couple variations of upbeat or hazy blissey whatever. Trey seems unsure of what direction to go. Just when you think it's going to be a bust, at the 9-minute mark things click and the X Factor strikes!! BUCKLE UP! For five glorious monstrous minutes they take the jam dark. Fishman slows the beat down and we enter that "Mexico 2025 20 Years Later" wah abuse, guitar meltdown area. ABSOLUTELY GLORIOUS!!! Just facemelting fire. Heavy and dark. YES!!! ALL MY YES!!! LETS GO!!! Around the 14 minute mark they finally lessen the fiery inferno and the jam picks back up tempo perfectly. This jam is SMOOTH!!!! The jam proceeds to get ridiculously funky while also being heavy and rocking and DRIVING! The heavy, driving funk lasts a good while for morphing expectedly straight into hard rock. And I know we like to bitch about them returning to the song at the end of a jam but this is an example of it working absolutely stupendously. The transition back into the main rip is absolutely flawless. This was one of the finest versions in years if not ever in my opinion. Easily the best sense Dicks 2024 (to my memory), although of course it doesn't come close to beating that adventurous mega monster. THIS SUCKER KICKED SO MUCH ASS IT'S NOT EVEN FUNNY!!!

10/10 MUST HEAR!!!

We get the nicely placed cool down of a typically fantastic Roggae. Similar to the Mexico 2026 version, It is so perfectly constructed. Just absolutely flawless once again. A great Roggae is a great Roggae, and they are a dime a dozen, but man I swear this one is also must hear. I am completely understating this version. It's just magical. You need this in your life.

Easing the tempo back up its into Ya Mar next. Strong version. The playing is immaculate in the energy high. If only it was longer! The playing is so good but it feels like it's over just as it's beginning!

After a snarling but typical reading of The Dogs comes Billy Breathes. Love the song and it's always wonderful to hear. Contender for their best ballad?? This one is very good but nothing special. It's pretty much played okay but there's one or two slightly hesitant moments. But it's pure nitpicking on my part.

What isn't nitpicking is me saying that the following Its Ice is a mess!! What a shame! The song itself sounds perfectly played, nicely played at the album tempo. Then holy mother of 2004 Phish what happened at the hard part?! Trey COMPLETELY botched it, straight up dropping out of the entire thing just about. Easily the worst played version of that section in years if not ever. That was unbelievably spectacularly awful. What the corn! I know we have all bad nights but holy crap You have to hear this to hear how bad it was. Dang! :( What the hell ...

Thankfully the set closes on an EXTREMELY high note with a 12 minute Walls of the Cave. This is one of those great versions that transcends the average hot readings most shows receive. This one just goes next level nuclear. Trey is shredding his absolute balls off. I love when he does that seagull screaming pitch shifting thing while he's in the middle of holding a sustained note. This is definitely must hear in my opinion. Fantastic!

All in all, I really enjoyed this set despite the flaws. It started very strongly but dipped pretty noticeably later on only to finish just as strongly as it started. The Lizards, SYSF, Roggae and Walls are all definitely must hear readings. All of that being said I also was a big fan of the flow of the set - It felt like all the right songs were placed in exactly the right spot, You know what I mean? Great Dynamics as far as the setlist construction!!

I'd give the set somewhere in between a B+ and an A- because the dip was so large later on But the highlights were smashing. Hard to explain without listening to it. The energy and enthusiasm were there throughout and there was never a dip in regards to that. Trey was just crushing with his soloing as well and Fishman was going BONKERS!

Set 2

Having ended set one with Walls, How surprising that we get the other half of the Round Room long song duo to open set 2! Surely that has never happened before eh?! A very nicely played and fiery Pebbles kicks things off very nicely. I wouldn't call it must hear but it is excellently played.

And it leads us into the first mega Jam of the night with a massive 28 minute Mind!!! And it's an absolutely bonkers version. I'll admit upfront it's not my favorite though. It's one of those very kind of....spastic jams where you can't tell which way is up we're left or right and it's all kind of messy regardless of being awesome. Jam starts promisingly with the band laying down a hard uptempo dark funkiness.
Trey unfortunately reverts back to SYSF and spends a solid three or four minutes lost unsure what to do. I mean it gets in the total meandering territory. Finally around the 9-minute mark He figures his stuff out. For several minutes they all link up and the jam takes off like you expect. Around the 12-minute mark it starts to shift. Things start to slowly get more upbeat and blissful. It's a slow transition beautifully done. It lasts for a mesmerizing 5 minutes or so going all the way to the 17 minute mark.
An extremely slow build, they explore the hazy heights of the sky. It's reminiscent of the boulder 2025 Crosseyed, but a bit more relaxed. It's a really really nice section. Finally around the 17 minute mark it's slowly starts to transition again. They spend the next 4 minutes putting the pedal to the metal and blaze it to a Walls of the Cave style freakout. Absolute insanity.
Somewhere around the 22 minute mark they finally get through it and hit a nice crowd interaction stop start moment. Soon after they perfectly return into the beat of the song led by Gordo and Fishman. They quickly bring the song to a close but instead of ending it they leave us with about 5 minutes of pure dark ambience. They just dissolve us into the cloud of Doom. Very much the sequel to Dark Puddle.COMPLETE WITH FOUR KITTY MEOWS! :D

I Must note before we move on that that was not my favorite jam. It definitely kicked ass and is must hear for sure, But it's very messy and all over the place. It takes a while to get going and it feels like Trey is struggling to keep up throughout leaving the other guys - ESPECIALLY Fishman!!! - To lead the jam and transitions it feels like. I know others will disagree with me but the spastic and all over the place nature of this jam was kind of hard to get through for me. My issues are nitpicking though so keep that in mind.
.
Not to leave us disappointed, Trey executes the best Piper transition in years. A 16-minute version at that. He does not rush it and he begins it perfectly as the haze of evil is slowly giving away like a phoenix rising from the ashes. He is actually patient for once and the song itself takes a damn FOUR minutes to reach the jam!!! Seriously that segue and transition was absolutely phenomenal. For the love of God please do Piper like this more often!!! An excellent reading overall. Very much "stuck in one zone" though. A variation on the usual shred til you die readings. But this one is very goopy and spacey. And heavy. Trey just slamming power chords etc. its not very adventurous but its still great.

Up next we get a breather/face melted with The greatest version of Monsters yet (I say that every single time but I swear it's true with each passing version). Not much to say it just annihilates. Absolutely must hear!!!

After that some very serious X Factor strikes!!! A 13 minute LSG follows. This one goes deep outer space goopy type 2!!!! The jam is very space -funk whatever. Trey sets some loopers, they squiggle it up, things are nasty etc. In the back half Fishman plays with the beat and the jam just descends/skyrockets into a more majestic and POWERFUL kind of area. Very ethereal and heavy, fiery and dark, but blissful all at once. Pure heavy metal space funk atmospheric whatever. YO LET'S GET IT THIS IS FREAKING AMAZING. OFF TO JUPITER WE GO!!! WOOOO!!!!
It's hard to explain this jam on the fly - But it's absolutely bonkers from start to finish. Now THIS is what an all timer looks like. In all seriousness, because I don't remember, Is this the most "pure type 2 jammed out" person of the song we've gotten?!?! I mean it pretty much immediately leaves home base and never comes back. The ending few minutes are just spectacular with everybody linking up into an interstellar voyage of goopy sound effect laden space rocking. Very twinkly and, well, spacey! Its hard to explain. Finally they execute another perfect return to the song and send us out .

BEST JAM OF THE SHOW. THAT WAS ABSOLUTELY INCREDIBLE. HOLY MOTHER OF GOD YOU NEED TO HEAR THAT!!!!! :D

From there it's into a rare standalone Whats the Use. WTU, the following Vultures and SANTOS all deliver typically strong if not particularly noteworthy readings.

The show concludes on an emotionally perfect note with a very nice Slave. This one is powerful and slow building. As with Piper, Trey is patient in his playing, and to great effect, just milking his notes for all they are worth. Im calling this must hear. It resonated with me heavily - and im not usually a Slave guy, so when I am excited about one it's a very good sign okay? :) its really spectacular!!! Damn.

All in all, this was an excellent show marred by a few flaws. For set two, the entire Mind>Piper, Monsters, LSG and Slave are all definitely must hear!!! That being said I have to say it's hard to explain this show. I've been thinking about the 3.9 rating it has and how I feel it is a couple points too low.

It's definitely a step down from the night prior, But only because of the horrific Ice in set 1, Trey meandering here and there at times in the jams, and the whole thing feeling More like they are "working hard" for excellence tonight rather than the true X Factor shining through and leading them (does that make any sense?). The night before felt like one of those nights where the show just flowed out like magic. This one it feels like they are having to try very hard on a conscious level to make sure it is great. And they do make sure it's great!

If this is a 3.9 then this is the greatest 3.9 in the history of the band. What 3.9 - Even by 2026 standards - has THAT Mind>Piper, THAT LSG, THAT Monsters, THAT Slave?!?! Nevermind the terrific Lizards, SYSF, Walls and Roggae in set one. Never mind the fact that the energy is Sky high and the show feels like You are getting punched in the face the entire time....

Also shoutouts to the terrific set placement and flow of the show as well as MVP Jon Fishman. Also to mention is that as much as I'm raving about this show it wasn't my favorite and it felt like it was overly long but it was probably just me and my mood today. But the show is absolutely kick ass.

I know ratings don't mean anything blah blah blah but who cares I like them as a general metric reference point or whatever. It's cool to see what the general consensus seems to be on a show. In this case I disagree with the 3.9 rating. Personally I'd give it somewhere between a 4.1 and a 4.2. If it was less uneven and had more "magic" I would regard it higher.

Even all that being said I'm still saying it's an absolutely EXCELLENT show. Other than Ice, whatever problems I have with it are pretty minuscule and won't be picked up by most people. Don't let this show fall away in the wake of the other Titans surrounding it!!!
