2023-10-10 Dayton, OH

Onwards to show 4 of Fall 2023

10/10/23 Dayton, OH

Set 1

Sigma Oasis - 13 minute Sigma to open the show! Things rage hard as expected until around the 7 minute mark. Then the jam begins to take a dark turn! It never goes totally off the deep end, but it instead slowly turns back towards the light. The end of this sees the song peaking out in a massive, monster-sized bliss-peak of triumph and glory. This is MUST HEAR!!! FRIGGIN SPECTACULAR SIGMA!!!! WOW!!

The 9th Cube -
Only 2nd version ever played!!! As with Sightless Escape in Nashville, WHERE THE F DID THIS COME FROM AND WHY HAVE THEY NOT BEEN PLAYING IT ALL THIS TIME!!! The guys NAIL it - obviously extensively rehearsed, this is arguably even better than the debut version!! MUST HEAR!!!! SICK!!!

Theme From the Bottom -
An absolutely SOARING Type 1 version! Seriously, this is utterly ridiculous - rocket fuel multiplied by nuclear bomb multiplied by hose on top of hose on top of more HOSE!!! FRIGGIN HOSE!!!! HOSEPOCALYPSE!!!! Damn!

Cool Amber and Mercury - This sucker is jam charted, so that's a great sign! Arguably the finest version yet played! Bustout alert #2, first version since The Gorge 2021!!!! FACEPLANT INTO ROKK!!! The jam immediately gets cooking hot with Page taking the lead, going NUTS with strange keyboard sounds and vocal samples. Then Page lays back and lets Trey solo it up all chill-like. From here, they slowly ramp up the heat bit-by-bit until the song reaches yet another explosive apex. Pure machine-gun Trey facemelting of the NUCLEAR HOSE EXPLOSION variety!! HOLY FRIGGIN CRAP LETS GO!!! MUST HEAR MUST HEAR MUST HEAR!!!!

555 - Unfortunately, 555 is up next and bring the set to a screeching halt. The "clumsy" nature of this tune just feels like it sucked all the energy out of the set, but thankfully the dark jam in the back half is excellent as ever. For the sake of not highlighting friggin' everything once more, I'll restrain myself with this one.

Bathtub Gin - Well of course we HAVE to highlight a 15 minute Gin! :) Right away, Trey is playing fast and loose with rhythms, giving this a herky-jerky feel that is pretty fun. Then around 6:30, the jam starts to take off slowly with some dark heat. Trey sets some psychedelic loopers and it's off to the races. By the 7:30 mark, the tempo has increased to a good clip. Trey is soloing it up with Page doing his electric-piano thing in the background. Gotta say, the spacial placement of the instruments is not great - it's like everything is placed in the center of the stereo spectrum, making it really hard to pick out Gordo/Page/Trey from each other. It's like they are sitting on top of each other in the mix....Around 8:30, Trey turns on the 1999 pitch shifter and Gordo kicks on his FX. The jam keeps increasing in speed, ultra-funky-like, and it's like a crazy, not-really-danceable funk tornado! GOOPY FUNKY GROOVE TORNADO!!! By 9:30, the song is now basically speeding along at TWICE the original tempo!! By 10:30, we are in a chill-yet-fast Birds of a Feather type zone! Then Page jumps back to the piano and it's ON!!! Impending bliss-hose finale incoming!!! Get your seatbelts on!!!! And this is what happens for the final few glorious minutes of this X Factor Magic Gin!!!! Stellar!! MUST HEAR!!! Very unique!!!! WOW!!! :D CHECK OUT THAT ULTRA SMOOTH TRANSITION BACK INTO THE THEME AT THE END!!!!

:faint::faint::faint::faint::faint::faint::faint::faint::faint::faint::faint::faint::faint::faint::faint::faint::faint::faint::faint::faint::faint::faint::faint::faint::faint::faint::faint::faint::faint::faint::faint::faint::faint::faint::faint::faint::faint::faint::faint::faint::faint::faint::faint::faint::faint::faint::faint::faint::faint::faint::faint::faint::faint::faint::faint::faint::faint::faint::faint::faint::faint::faint::faint::faint::faint::faint::faint::faint::faint::faint::faint::faint::faint::faint::faint::faint::faint::faint::faint::faint::faint::faint::faint::faint::faint::faint::faint::faint::faint::faint::faint::faint::faint::faint::faint::faint::faint::faint::faint::faint::faint::faint::faint::faint::faint::faint::faint::faint::faint::faint::faint::faint::faint::faint::faint::faint::faint::faint::faint::faint::faint::faint::faint::faint::faint::faint::faint::faint::faint::faint::faint::faint::faint::faint::faint::faint::faint::faint::faint::faint::faint::faint::faint::faint::faint::faint:
This fall tour is just getting better and better and better!!!!

Broken Into Pieces -
Only the 2nd version, if memory serves! Great set placement!! Great song - play this more!!! Damn strong, this is total classic-rock ballad perfection. Killer. Play this more, please!

Reba -
Very good Reba, if not classic. The composed section is 99% flawless aside from 1 or 2 very brief moments of blink-and-youll-miss-it flubbage. The only downside is that the slower tempo gives it a more tired/relaxed feel that kinda hurts it, imo. The solo isn't amazing either. Tries hard but overall this Reba misses the mark for no reason in particular. Many people will call this excellent - and they aren't wrong. This was totally a "feel" thing on my part. Execution-wise, it was great!!! Still, worthy of a highlight! However, the final minute or so when the solo peaks is downright magic!!!

Chalkdust Torture - And straight into CDT to close the set! Very awkward transition and start of the song. Thankfully, it quickly coalesces and the thing shoots off like a friggin rocket ****, awkwardness be damned. Maybe not must-hear, but incredibly hot and does the trick!

All in all, this set showed a ton of promise but felt like the smallest of steps down from Nashville #3. This was mainly due to the "off" feel to the playing tonight. Not exactly flubby, but not always as tight as it should be. Still killer though - the Cool Amber, 9th Cube, Gin and Sigma are all MUST HEAR!!! Theme gets honorable mention as well. Great stuff! '

Set 2

Mike's Song - "yea...." :D Gotta love it when the set opens with a TWENTY MINUTE Mike's Song!!!! Return of the Son of the MSG version?! Not gonna try to super-narrate the whole thing but here we go. Rages hard as expected, then around 9 minutes we dive into chill-bliss, piano territory. Very unique! For the next several glorious, heavenly minutes, we are in a chill zone with Trey doing uber-melodic sustained holds Page on the piano. Extremely magical!!! Magic Mike's! :D This sections last a very long time, going all the way to about 14 minutes!!! Then at 14:45, we switch to a dark and suspenseful section, all hard pounding and riffage!!! Slowly they build and build and build until the whole thing is barelling down the tracks like a train out of control!!!!! By 17 minutes, the jam is friggin EXPLODING in a fiery, volcanic rage of guitar and band destruction!!! This is friggin SICK!!! MUST HEAR!!! This was yet another one of the best jams of the year!! Totally patient and slow-building!! No rushing, but always moving forwards!!!! Fantastic!!!! MUST HEAR!! And then back into the Mike's theme to close...

>Prince Caspian - A bit of an awkward (word of the night) follow on from that masterful Mike's Song. The guys are not locked in at all and the lyrics are a jumbled mess. It's all in fun and jest and it is just Caspian so it gets a pass, but in no way, shape or form is this must hear.

No Men In No Man's Land - Feels like we haven't had one of these in forever! Great to pick us back up after that dreadful Caspian. This sucker absolutely crushes. Basically, 12 glorious, fiery, rage-tastic Type 1 minutes of insanity like it's 2018 all over again. Fantastic little No Men!!! Must hear!!! Wow! A++++++++++++++ hose explosion!!!! FIRE! FIRE! FIRE! FIRE! FIRE! FIRE FROM THE FRIGGIN SKY!!!! THAT PEAK! THAT PEAK! THAT PEAK!!!!
:faint::faint::faint::faint::faint::faint::faint::faint::faint::faint::faint::faint::faint::faint::faint::faint::faint::faint::faint::faint::faint:

>Prince Caspian Reprise - As it says. Huh. How about that. HOW DID THEY FRIGGIN DO THAT!!! THAT WAS INCREDIBLE!!! :D

It's Ice - First one since the MSG run. That version was terrific, so how will this one fare? Slowish tempo on this yet again. Trey is having issues throughout, but nothing dire. Just focus on Page's glorious piano and all will be fine. MSG version this is not. The composed sections are not a trainwreck, but I would definitely call them rough. This is like a 2018/2019 version all over again! A fine Ice for what it is, but you will never hear me singing the praises of this one.

Pillow Jets - Is this seriously only the THIRD version of this?! What the hell?! Play this more!!! This versions delivers as much as the last two - pure sonic noize destruction. Like a booming thunderstorm and crashing explosions of lightning from the sky. Must hear!!! Fantastic! This one goes EXTRA deep and dark, Gordo even breaks out the power drill!!

>Weekapaug Groove
- Cool segue back into Paug! Typical modern day Paug reprise, except that this one reaches an excellent, red-hot climax. Shred-tastic. Maybe not must-hear, but strong enough to be considered highlight worthy!

Twist - Ah, a typical modern Twist to kill the set as usual....Thankfully, this one bucks the trend. Absolutely must hear! Super slow and downright bluesy! Stuff gets HOT!!!! MUST HEAR!!! Builds to the hottest finale you can imagine. Fantastic! Molten volcanic heat!!!

Slave to the Traffic Light - Absolutely stellar. Must hear!

encore:

Joy
Buffalo Bill
Wilson
First Tube

^^^^all great, not much to say.

All in all, this was easily my least favorite of the 4 shows so far. It started terrific then after Bathtub Gin it just became a bit too scattershot without the tightness in the playing to make up for it. This show felt all over the damn map - and it's long too, at 3 hours and 7 minutes on the LivePhish recording. There was a ton to like, and it was a very good show, but it absolutely felt like a bit of a step backwards, if you will.

Get the set 1 highlights I already mentioned. Then for set 2, I'd say Mike's Song, No Men, Twist and Slave are what you need.

2023-10-08 Nashville, TN

 Onward to 10 8 23 Nashville 3

Set 1

Buried Alive - My God the drum sound is awful! That aside, this is pretty perfect. Killer version more than worthy of a highlight!

AC/DC Bag - For the sake of not listing everything, I wont highlight this, but it was an excellent type 1 reading. Really great!

>Free - KILLER!!! Bit of a sloppy segue into it. The jam is chill and easy then it slowly morphs into the fire. Must hear!!!

Sightless Escape - WHERE DID THEY PULL THIS FROM?! KEEP THIS IN ROTATION!!!!! HELL YES!! THIS WAS SICK!!! MUST HEAR!!!

Undermind -
Lets get it!!! Page shredding the keys, Trey delivering pure fire... spectacular!!! A++++ The guys are locked in tight!! Must hear!!!! X FACTOR MAGIC!!! THIS IS HOTTER THAN A NUCLEAR BOMB!!!!

Ya Mar - See AC/DC Bag. Killer Type 1 but nothing special.

Beauty of a Broken Heart - A+!!! My favorite Page song and they NAIL it!! Kick ass!!!

Hey Stranger - One of the sickest jams of the year. Must hear. Nuclear explosion wah funk destruction. Incredible. DONT SKIP THIS!!! HOLY CRAP!!!!

Taste - Hell yes!
As killer as every other 2023 reading.

Evolve - Is Evolve. Good as ever.

Ghost - 13 min Ghost to close the set. Killer.

All in all, this might have been my favorite of the three first sets so far!! A++++ on the setlist - absolutely the most colorfully diverse set maybe all year!!!! And the playing backed it up. Id say Sightless Escape and Hey Stranger and Ghost are the main highlights musically, but the whole thing killed.

Set 2

Birds of a Feather - 15 min BOAF to open the set! Like the Ghost, this is a total adventure. Goes into type 2 blip bloop land before concluding in a massive hose explosion. Fantastic! Must hear!!!

Wave of Hope - 13 minutes, this one has a funkier gait about it (to my ears, at least). Does its usual hose bliss thing but ends up going DEEP into a hazy, crazy ambience for several glorious minutes!!! Must hear!

Cinnamon Girl - RETURN OF THE SON OF WHERE THE F DID THIS COME FROM?!?!? SICK!!!!

Golden Age -
16 minute Golden Age?! Lets friggin go!!!!! Starts off getting real chill and funky. Soon Gordo and Trey kick on their fx and we are headed for type 2. Robo bliss?? Synths creep in and the jam takes on a very tense and foreboding sound. This is sick!!!! MUST HEAR!!!!!! PSYCHEDELIC BLACK HOLE OUTER SPACE ROBOT GOLDEN AGE!!!!!!!!! DEEPER THAN THE HOLLYWOOD SYSF!! DEEPER THAN THE PHILLY WELL!!!!! HOLY MOTHER OF SATAN!!!!! BLACK HOLE VORTEX OF DOOM AND DEATH!!!!!

>
The Well - 9 minutes of guitar rape. Killer
.

You Enjoy Myself - FLAWLESS!!! HELL YES!!! A++++++ WHAT EVEN IS THIS SHOW?!?!?!

The Howling -
Not quite the Dicks monster, but this is about 3/4 as good. Worth a listen.

Suzy Greenberg - Standard Suzy to close

All in all...jesus christ what a set and what a show! The run got better with each show and this night was easily the best since Dicks 2. Outstanding show ....

2023-10-07 Nashville, TN

Onwards to night two of Nashville 2023.

10/7/23

Aka the 2001 show

Set 1 -

2001 - Must hear!!! Incredible opening, its about 12 minutes long and jammed pretty good. Massive, x factor rock and roll hose peak conclusion. Wow!!!

>Gumbo - Hell yea!!!
Absolutely STELLAR version in slot two!!! Everyone is locked in and this thing just explodes from all angles. Trey is going banana sandwich all over and its a giant, goopy, funky mess of a good time! 10,000 percent must hear!! Where did they pull this from?!?!?

Beauty of My Dreams - Rusty and rare, but enjoyable still

Mull>2001>Mull - Spectacular!!! Must hear!!! Mull is yet another winner (not a bad version all year). The jam gets going good then Trey steers them into a full blown 2001 reprise for like 2 minutes before falling back into the funky Mull jam. This is why we Phish, yo :) Sick. The whole thing was sloppy as hell - ragged but right :)

Dirt - Rare Dirt to cool us off. A little too "jagged" tonight but otherwise good as ever.

Stash - 15 minute Stash. Trey is not having a good night, forgetting parts in the intro, but thankfully his tight playing makes up for it. The jam is basically an improvement of the 2001 jam that began the show. Incredible x factor hose explosion. Must hear.

Ether Edge - Gets better every time they play it!

About to Run - Is ATR. Love the song but im getting bored with it lately. Take it deep or something....

Split Open and Melt - Enter the wormhole. 19 minutes of indescribable Type 2 lunacy to close the set. This one felt like it did the most with its run time than some other recent Melts. Best part is when the craziness dies and it concludes in a Caspian esque rock and roll finale :)

Set 2

Life Saving Gun - Kick. Ass.

Sand - Short, but felt way more potent than youd think. Spectacular version. Must hear.

Everything's Right - Good stuff, but nothing special.

>Cities - A FRIGGIN 16 MINUTE CITIES!!! HELL YES!!! X FACTOR MAGIC!!! LETS GO!!!!! MUST HEAR!!!! Dark and grimy and gritty and funky...ROBO CITIES!!!! DIVIDED SKY SUSTAIN OF THE GODS!!! Then it morphs into the expected bliss hose and everything is right with the world....

Wow....

>Llama - Pure ridiculousness. And thst segue out of Cities was beyond magic.

I Always Wanted It This Way - 12 minutes of rock and roll bombast. Must hear. NUCLEAR BOMB.

Bug, Lonely Trip and Hood to close.

All in all, yea, night 1 was a piece of garbage compared to the mighty monstrosity that is night 2!!! This was a CLASSIC show for any era. 5/5 from me....

2023-10-06 Nashville, TN

Time to finish 2023 with the recent fall tour!

Onwards to:

10/6/23 Nashville

Set 1

Julius - Raging version!! Explosive type 1! Machine Gun Trey is in the house!!! If you told me this was a 90s version Id probably believe you!!!

Back On the Train - X factor magic!!!! Version of the year!!! Mind blowing peak!!!!! Seriously - in a year of great versions, this is by far the best, imo. Incredible hose peak finale. Spectacular!!! MUST HEAR!!!

The Moma Dance - THREE ORANGE WHIPS?!
RETURN OF THE SON OF MUST HEAR!!!! ITS A THREEPEAT!!! Again, in a year full of exceptional Moma Dances, this has to be in the top 2 or 3 right behind only the Philly version and maybe one other, if that.

What the hell is going on?! There was more PASSION and EXCITEMENT in those first 3 songs than we have had since New York!!! Dude!!!!

Axilla -
Must hear yet again!! Smashing skull crusher version and the proggy outro jam is quite long as well. It descends into glorious RoboWah Type 2 for a couple magical minutes!!!! MUST HEAR!!! "THREE ORANGE WHIPS!!!!"

>Maze - YO, WHAT THE HELL, THAT EVIL SEGUE INTO THE PERFECT SONG CHOICE!!! LETS FRIGGIN GO!!!!!! THIS SET IS BLOWING MY MIND!!!! As with everything else so far, Maze is downright exceptional. Yet another "worthy of 90s Phish" absolute monster fireball. This aint no limpwristed girly little 2019 Maze. No it sure aint. Ass kicking supremacy. Holy crap. PEAK OF THE GODS!!! LETS GO!!!! VOLCANIC ERUPTION MOLTEN LAVA PHISH!!! OH MY EFFING GOD!!!!!! :faint::faint::faint::faint::faint::faint::faint::faint:

Wolfmans Brother -
Exceptional version in line with the rest of the set. Killer. The usual funk gives way to a patiently building bliss peak and they keep going higher and higher and rage it to a triumphant finale. Pounding piano and all. Killer. MUST HEAR!!! X FACTOR MAGIC!!! PEAK OF THE GODS!!! HOLY FRIGGIN CRAP!!!!

My Soul - MUST HEAR!!
Not like it means much, but this was, hands down, the hottest, most volcanic, most facemelting version Ive ever heard. Even better than most 1.0 versions. Yes, im serious.

Destiny Unbound - MUST HEAR!!! THAT JAM!!! THIS IS SICK!!!!

Character Zero - Closes set. Killer as expected. MUST HEAR!! SUPER GRIMY!!! Absolutely EXCEPTIONAL!!!!!!

All in all....WHERE THE HELL DID THEY PULL THIS SET FROM?!?!?!? This set alone just wipe the floor with the entirety of Dicks 2023 (aside from set 2 of 9/2, maybe). Hotter than the sun, the guys are LOCKED IN, the playing is magnificent, the flow stellar....Its clear the mystical x factor is FLOWING tonight.

That Maze was NO JOKE! Same goes for Train and Wolf. And dont sleep on Destiny either!!!!!

Everyone needs to inject this set directly into their veins. Hands down the best set since New York (aside from the aforementioned 9/2)

What the hell.

 Set 2

Gotta Jibboo - 13 min set opener! X FACTOR MAGIC!!! MUST HEAR!!!! Aquatic type 2 leads to a lengthy and deadly hose bliss finale. Greatest Jiboo since....when??!!

>Oblivion - YO THAT SEGUE!! THAT SEGUE!!! THAT WAS INCREDIBLE!!!! Even better, this is a nearly 22 minute beast of deadly X Factor proportions!!!!! Type 1 dark fire leads to a raging bliss peak before moving back to a more rock and roll style. Then the robo bullfrog comes out to play and we enter RoboFunk Land! :D Lots of delay and looper playing. Then we move back to bliss...killer stuff. An adventure! Magical whammy pedal-over-looper peak finale!!!! PEAKIEST PEAK IN ALL OF PEAKVILLE!!! HOLY CRAP!!!

Torn and Frayed - !!!!!!! Killer type 1. Play this more!!!

Light -
Only 10 minutes but goes type 2 quick. Feels longer than its duration. Great smaller jam!!!

>Fuego - Sketchy segue, but HOLY CRAP ON A CRACKER!!! I think this was even stronger than my lauded SPAC version!!!! Type 1 but MUST HEAR!!!

>
SANTOS - Volcanic Type 1. You know the deal.

Encore:

Bouncing Around the Room - Is Bouncing. Very nice to start the encore - first true break of the night!!

46 Days - Short but nuclear. Must heae!! Slow and dark and bluesy!!!!

Antelope - Nuts. Perfect way to end.

All in all...see my notes for set 1 and basically apply them here. I think Jibboo was the best jam but the whole thing was insane...

WHAT A SHOW!!!!!

2023-09-03 Commerce City, CO

Been a bad week for listening - family stress + a not-show-friendly truck route.

So it's taken a while, but today we shall finally conquer the beast that is Dick's 2023.

On to night 4, the "rain delay" show. On paper, this looks highly enjoyable to me - love the songs picked to play and it's a full 2.5 hours with a great looking set construction. Even if this ends up just being an average show musically, it's primed to be a blast to listen to.

9/3/23 Commerce City, CO

Set 1

Sigma Oasis - Great type 1 version as usual. Really nothing that "special", but it's another in a long line of excellent versions!! GREAT ENERGY!!! Worth a highlight for being such a kickass rager version. Fishman is absolutely going bonkers and Trey peaks this sucker hard towards the end. Awesome!

>Down With Disease - 16 minute version coming in slot two!!! Please don't suck, please don't suck, please don't suck....2023 has been an incredibly inconsistent year for Disease!!! And unfortunately the beginning of this one doesn't bode well.....And that about sums up the song itself - very LOOSE and free with the playing....not in a good way. Almost funky because of how much Trey is just "not really playing the song", so to speak. That's overstating it but if you hear it you will catch my drift. Yea, definitely just skip the song on this one. Ouch! This reading of Disease isn't AWFUL, but it's certainly nothing to write home about. The jam begins as expected, lukewarm Type 1....then around 5:50, you'll perk up and take notice - out of nowhere the jam gets a dark and suspenseful feeling about it!!! Not sure where this came from but this is cool! We have the potential for liftoff! They keep it in "darker Type I" territory for a few minutes before another SUDDEN shift at 8:30 into blissful jamming. Page and Trey link up and do a cool section where they try to mirror each other. This blissful Type 1 goes until around the 12 minute mark when they decide to start shifting gears again. Around 12:45 the jam moves into murkier waters for a bit before Trey ripcords them awkwardly back into the Disease riff to close.

All in all....not a fan of this Disease. It was yet another in a long line of "trying hard but not really achieving much" versions of late :( It had a few minutes worth at various points where they were clicking good but on the whole the song itself was trash and the jam just did that "wandering aimlessly" thing for far too long. I'm sure others will hear this totally differently and it was definitely an A+-for-effort kind of thing, but I just didn't think it was very good, if I'm being honest.....It was just an AWKWARD Disease....

The Moma Dance - Predictably, ordinarily hot for the first 2/3, then Trey wakes up and the guys absolutely EXPLODE this sucker to a smashing finale. Must hear for the final 2 minutes or so of facemelting. Not really highlightable though.

>Kill Devil Falls - Unexpected segue but the guys catch it quickly and it turns out to be a strong segue!!! Pretty nice bliss-fire jamming on this one. Regular length instead of the jammed out versions of recent times, but that's ok - sometimes you just want a great Type 1 blitz! Strong Type 1 version!!!

Free - Very, very nice version!!! Surprisingly funky and chill vibe on the soloing. Definitely different from the recent Saratoga version. Great little version worth a re-visit!

Everything's Right - Another 16-minute sucker! Trey sounds alive and alert in a way he honestly hasn't for most of the night. The jam begins with a SICK dive into a laidback, funky chill-fest!!! This is the most "together" and patient jamming of the night so far. Everyone sounds LOCKED IN with each other and the jam itself sound like it has purpose! Around 9 minutes, the patient chill jamming moves into darker Type II waters. The jam gets a watery darkness about it!!! Page on synths playing off of Trey, this thing is very rhythmic!!! Hands down the best playing of the night so far. This is awesome! Page is hamming it up on the synths and Trey starts to play off of him. Gordo then begins funking it up heavy-like behind them. THIS IS SICK!!! The next few minutes see Trey patiently soloing his heart out while the rest of the guys lay a gorgeous, aquatic bed of funky blissfulness beneath him. Similar to the 8/31 Tweezer, this one gets in it's "lane" and builds to a great climax. Definitely doesn't feel "aimless". A good strong peak section begins to develop around 14 minutes! They don't explode, but it's definitely a peak and hits the right spots.

Yo, that Everything's Right was terrific!!! Maybe not an all-timer, but as good as anything else played at this run. Easily the best music of the night so far. By a MASSIVE margin!!!

Roggae
- Nice spot to ease us out of that ER. Works better than you think!!! Wonderful Roggae! Even by the "every Roggae is beautiful" metric, this one stands out!!! Extra chill and gorgeous with an outstanding peak section!!!!! MUST HEAR!!!

The Wedge - Excellent as always but not particularly must-hear. Great Type 1 Wedge!!

Gumbo - A rare and surprisingly-placed Gumbo is up next. Love Page's soloing and the crowd goes nuts. Overall, Gumbo is Gumbo, but it's always great to hear! :)

>2001 - Well that's a strange choice for segue! 9 minutes, super funky, and it does exactly what you expect. Great stuff! Really nice patient and rhythmic jamming featuring strong interplay between everyone. They are actually jamming it and not just doing the whole "play until it's time for the theme" again. Maybe not must hear, but it's excellent!

>Fuego - Hell yea! Bring it on! 12 minutes and super tight! The boys just NAIL that intro! 2023 has been the best year for Fuego probably since 2014, no?! Add this one to the pile of awesomeness. Yea, it stays basically Type I, but it just kicks absolute ass from start to finish! Let the headbanging commence!!! Super STRONG reading!!!! A+++++ TYPE I!!! DON'T SLEEP ON THIS SUCKER!!! Spectacular version!!! Ultra-powerful with a crap ton of peaking. Wow. Where did this come from?! MASSIVE PEAK!!!! THIS IS A NUCLEAR BOMB!!! THIS IS AWESOME!!! HOLY CRAP!!!!

YO!!! THAT FUEGO WAS SOME X FACTOR AWESOMENESS!! PLEASE GO REVISIT THAT!!! IT WAS OUTSTANDING!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

>Runaway Jim -
Yo, what the hell was that segue?! Kinda awkward to start, it takes them a bit to get the tempo/feel dialed in, but it's nothing drastic. This Jim turns out to be incredibly worthy. I'd call it must-hear for a modern version. The guys click HARD and the chill vibe is so great. Trey is hitting all the right notes at the right times and the whole thing just has a powerful feeling about it. Super excellent with another great peak section where EVERYONE is just going exploding together!!! KILLER!!! Must hear!!! WOW!!!! SICK!!!! Classic!!!!

>
Twist
- Ah, and just like that the fun is over. Here comes yet another "hot but nothing special" Twist to gum up the works. :p Ok, enough negativity - it's another very strong Type 1 version that leans heavy into the latin vibe. Great stuff!!! Honestly? This is strong enough for me to label it must-hear. It does what you expect but does it FANTASTICALLY. Kinda like that Fuego!!! Just totally next-level in it's commitment to being an ordinary, Type I Twist. Oh yea, and the massive rock and roll peak is worth the price of admission all day. :)

About to Run -
If I'm gonna bother highlighting that Twist (which definitely deserves it), then I gotta highlight this too. Another "does exactly what you expect" rendition that just slaughters and snarls and gnashes and roars from start to finish. Killer as ever.

Harry Hood - Solid as ever but not particularly special in light of the several terrific versions preceeding it. I mean, there is nothing wrong with it, but there is absolutely nothing that good about it either. :p

More - X FACTOR SWIRLING TORNADO OF ROCK AND ROLL PEAKAGE!!! LETS GO!!!! FANTASTIC VERSION!!!!! :D

First Tube - Is First Tube

Tweeprise - Of course! :)

All in all, for a long while, this show was kinda the "disappointment" I was expecting, then with the impressive Everything's Right they seemed to turn a corner and the show became downright excellent! The whole stretch from ER through, say, Twist is terrific. I'd say the true must hear material of the night is the aforementioned Everything's Right as well as the "WHY IS THIS SO FREAKING GOOD?!" trio of Fuego>Jim>Twist!!!!

Seriously, don't sleep on that Fuego! No idea why this one is so particularly strong like that!!!!

This show won't be winning any awards any time soon, but there was a ton to like, if not love!!! Give this one a chance - you won't regret it!
