A strong, if too-chill-to-open-the-show Jibboo gets things started nicely.
No Men is next and builds some serious heat, but unfortunately Trey
pulls the plug right at that decisive point of liftoff. Stil a winner!
Steam is up next and picks up the slack majorly. A terrific version,
very rhythm centric with a strong focus on Mike and Fishman. Killer!
Poor Heart destroys as always, lol
Halley's is up next and its a downright outstanding version. Only 8
minutes, but it keeps the heat going and has a wonderful jam in the back
half, highlighted by Page's descending piano motif which gives it a
very late 90s kinda vibe. SICK.
No idea how (its a didnt see that coming segue), we move into Saw It
Again. I wouldnt call it a ripcord, and it worked, it was just kinda...didnt see that coming!!! And thankfully, Saw It Again crushes big time! Bang your head!!!! FIRE! FIRE! FIRE! FIRE!!!
Good golly...
First cool down of the night, Theme is up next. Theme is standard but still nice.
A+ segue into Maze!!!! Didnt see that coming either!!!! Maze is TERRIFIC!!! It
more than does justice to its legacy. This isnt another weak late 3.0
Maze, this one is legitimately awesome. All grindy and gnarly, Trey just
rips it to shreds. Killer.
About to Run keeps the heat going. Epic and rocking to hell as always. Trey friggin WAILS on this sucker! Good Lord!!!!!
Most Events Arent Planned closes this smashing set. Very funky tonight! A
totally stomping rendition, this thing just slays as usual. Treys
constant guitar fills are all kind of awesome. This thing is freaking AWESOME! GO HEAR THIS RIGHT NOW!!! FREAKING SPECTACULAR!!!!!! HOLY CRAP THIS IS AMAZING!!!!!!!
All in all, this set wasnt the X Factor Jam Extraordinaire of
2/24, but this was one of the most "LETS FRIGGIN ROCK!" sets youll hear
instead!!! Most of the songs turned in very strong readings with some
absolutely wonderful shorter jams. Dont sleep on this one - its
infinitely better than you thought it was. Steam, Most Events, Halley
and Maze are the must hear songs, imo.
Wow....
Set 2 is kinda strange.
A massive 25 minute Disease opens proceedings. It never really goes
anywhere and is basically a "red hot Type I from hell" version for its
epic length duration. No crazy effects, no different sections, just
pure, unadulterated rock and roll.
Very awesome but a little odd.
This goes into a subpar Golden Age that is pleasant but goes nowhere.
Out of GA and into Soul Planet which brings the strange!!! It rages HARD
and goes black hole, outer space, Carini type 2 for a good long while! MUST HEAR!!!!
This leads into a hot Runaway Jim that gives way to maybe the jam of the set -
Light is only 10 minutes but goes full on robo funk type II right away and just destroys. GET THIS LIGHT!!!! ABSOLUTELY MUST HEAR!!!!
So the Light kinda peters out and the guys opt for a Piper. Ok...Piper
gets going quickly and it's immediately apparent this is going to be an
uptempo rager. Trey is almost yelling the lyrics! And thats exactly what
happens. Careening through outer space fire raging. You already know what this sounds like. Must hear! Then as quickly as it began, so it shall conclude.
Into 2001 perfectly. Nicely jammed out, reaching 9 minutes in length!
The jamming in this is nice and patient and the guys make it sound like
Godzilla just stomping all around the place. Killer. I would
almost argue this goes Type II!!! Definitely way different and more
exploratory than most recent versions. It even reaches a point where
they just about coulda lead into No Quarter! Must hear! I cant believe
people arent raving about this one!!!!!
Santos to close the set. Heck yes. Great segue into it! Killer normal version to end the set. Perfect.
A rare Fee and an extremely unexpected Wedge to close the show. Not a great encore.
All in all, I definitely understand the complaints for this set. It
tries extremely hard but sometimes things just dont coalesce for
whatever reason. Nothing here is poor and at least everything ROCKS
hard, so if you are an energy and vibe kinda guy, this is the set for
you. Id honestly say the entire Soul Planet through 2001 sequence was
must hear. Killer.
A comedown from last night? Yes. A friggin 3.2 rating?! HELL NO! This
was a great show overall, it just didn't "hit perfection" as much as we
would have liked. Its a little "throw it all at the wall and see what
sticks", but don't overthink that assessment. If every 3.2 was this
great, we'd be saying we are in the golden age of Phish....
Also, Fishman is by far the MVP of this show. The man just never lets up and I paid attention to him more than anybody!
If you want HIGH ENERGY FUN, this is the show for you! I couldnt stop headbanging!!!
